Why You Should Always Hire A Birth Photographer | Riverside Murrieta Temecula County Birth Photographer
As my client scrunches her face and focuses on concentrating to do her best at breathing through yet another contraction her birth coach/husband watches as I crouch down, quietly focusing my camera and presses the shutter button. As that button releases, I know that I've captured, the indescribable pain and beauty of labor.
I'm not a stranger or an intruder during this deeply personal and private journey of labor, but a professional photographer hired to capture their new arrival.
You may ask yourself, “why are couples hiring birth photographers”. Here’s a few reason my clients have given to me recently.
“My spouse was unable to attend the birth of our first child due to be on military deployment, having a birth photographer like Heather from Blossom and Bloom Photography in the room with me during my entire labor allowed me to know that my husband would soon be able to see everything he missed during the birth of our daughter,"
“I was convinced that hiring Heather was going to be my best investment after the birth of my friends son. Heather photographed my friends birth and the images were breath taking. The look on her husband's face was priceless, as her doula was pulling their son up and handing him to her the image was created. I knew I wanted the same during the birth of my baby. My family would be able to take snapshots, but I knew a professional photographer would be able to capture the raw emotions of the entire labor and delivery."
“My wife and I wanted to make sure we were able to remember every detail of the birth of our daughter. Having a birth photographer was just as important as having a doula.”
The question asked the most …
“Will my doctor allow a birth photographer?
I will tell you that most doctors, hospitals, doulas and midwives are comfortable with the idea of having a professional photographer during your labor and delivery. Keep in mind that recording a birth becomes a different story.
Dr. De la Pana, an OB/GYN at Los Robles Hospital in California said "Photography that is a still photography, even at moment of birth, is perfectly fine." Take that one step further, however, and try recording the birth via video and he states you could be facing "an uncomfortable working environment. It's been a good policy to not have videotaping at our hospital," Dr. de la Pana stated. "Recording during labor and even after is fine, but not during the actual birth."
How does this all work?
Once you are ready to hire a birth photographer, be sure to do it early on during your pregnancy. As a Birth Photographer, I tend to limit the amount of clients that I have. I want to make sure that I am able to have an "on-call" status for my clients as they become closer to their birth due date. It’s very important that on the big day you designate a point person, that the birth photographer can keep in touch with during the entire process.
One of my clients had this to say about the process …
"We'd been in contact a few times the week leading up to labor," explained Jennifer. "I called her when my water broke, at 4:30pm and we texted throughout the evening about my progress. She normally comes to the hospital when her client is 4-5 cm dilated. Heather arrived with all of her gear and my heart and mind felt at ease. She was perfectly in tune with the entire birth process.”
How should I prepare my nurses?
For mothers looking to hire a birth photographer, I recommend getting an agreement in writing with the healthcare staff early on.
