Baby Danny's Birth Story ...
I knew when I spoke with Heather about the upcoming birth of her son Danny that I would be in for a treat, besides having an amazing name (ok I'm bias), I just knew that Heather was a very loving and caring individual. I was pleasantly surprised that Heather was fully prepared for the birth of her son and didn't leave any detail of her birth plan untouched. She had her amazing husband by her side the entire time as well as a local doula. The birth team was formed and all that was needed was for little Danny to arrive.
Heather and I chatted via messenger through out almost her entire birth. She was on my calendar for a Birth Story session months prior to baby Danny's arrival. This really is extremely helpful because it allowed Heather and I time to really get to know each other and share with each other the birth plan and other details necessary for me to photograph the perfect Birth Story.
When I got the call from Heather and her birth doula that her contractions had started I was extremely excited. I left for Kaiser Riverside Hospital around 6:30/7:00pm as soon as I was informed that Heather and her husband were heading to the hospital. I actually beat them to the hospital and waited in the family room of the hospital.
The nurses hooked Heather up to the baby monitors, that's when I heard the strong heartbeat of baby Danny. I knew this baby was going to be one strong little guy! Heather labored with baby Danny for many hours with the lights low, music playing in the background and from time to time listening to her Hypnobaby (Hypnobirthing) recordings. Heather's original birth plan did not include having an epidural or any other medications unless medically necessary. However, after almost 9 hours of hard labor and strong contractions in the hospital alone, she opted to have an epidural. She was already going on about 15-20 hours of labor at this point, most of which was spent laboring in the comfort of her home. The epidural allowed Heather to actually get some rest, which she needed.
Myself and the doula excused ourselves and actually slept in my car! That's right, two birthing team warriors caught a few quick zzzz's in the parking lot, but not before we made a quick Starbucks run for food, who would have thought to go to Starbucks at 4:30am.
At around 9am we both headed back up to the room as we got word that they would be checking her dilation again. Heather was resting on her side with a yoga ball on her bed, which was helping prop up her leg. When checked again, the nurse was elated to tell everyone that Heather was ready to start actively pushing. She had gotten to 10cm! Everyone in the room, especially Heather and her husband Danny were overjoyed.
Heather only pushed a handful of times before little Danny was born! She was a real birth warrior during her entire labor and delivery. Danny's daddy was overjoyed and just couldn't take his eyes off of his son, it was the cutest thing EVER!
