Many photographers and creatives often struggle with watermarking the images on their website, social media, etc. The question often goes something lie this, "Should I watermark my images?" and it tends to pop up on Facebook groups, during networking meetings, and photography workshops.
Today, I'd like to share a few of my thoughts about watermarking and why I feel that it's really not necessary to watermark photos anymore. Don't worry I was down right shocked myself, when I came to the realization!!!
As a wedding photographer, I had been watermarking my images for YEARS! I've been enjoying the change and cleaner look.
Watermarking photos looks more professional.
When I first started photographing clients, I attempted to watermarked my photos because I thought it made me appear to be professional. You know, because if I had a logo on my images I must be seasoned, right!? Let's go ahead and seriously face it, right now, together ... The TRUTH is, watermarked or not people will take you serious IF your professionalism shows through, not your watermark.
Just go look around at some of those blogs you love, you'll quickly notice there are no watermarks on images. Why because it's distracting. They do however site the photographer if they are a reputable blog.
Watermarking photos protects them from being stolen, edited, and shared without your permission.
The truth is, your photos aren’t safe. Im guess that stung a little. It's ok, it almost made me want to stop putting my images online too. Let's go ahead and get real with each other, if your images do get stolen, do you have the energy or bandwidth to police the internet? This isn't the late 90's and early 2000's where finding duplicated images on the World Wide Web was easier. A majority of the images I've actually had stolen had my logo on it, they edited it out or cropped it out. That easy.
My clients invest a good portion of money into their one of a kind portrait story session. I want them to love and share their photos, for many years to come. My business exists to serve them, not my ego and a watermarks just distract from their memories. Plus, it actually takes extra time to watermark my images, which in turn is money I feel is wasted.
But let’s get back to the real-world application for a second, because my professional photos have actually been used without my permission, it's happened about 1,000+ times.
I have to ask myself these three questions ...
Do I have the time to search for the publishers, blogs, writers, etc that have taken my images?
Are they going to remove the image if asked?
Most likely not.
How much time would I waste if I had to police all my images?
Far too much.
If I wanted to get them to take down the photos they have stolen and shared without my permission, I would’ve had to go through an entire legal process — which isn't worth my time and probably isn’t worth yours either. Unless you think the money you lost (or they made) from stealing your photos is worth more than the legal fees you’ll most likely incur to fight them.
I'm not saying it makes it right, I am not condoning those that steal images without permission. However, as a small business owners I have to make sure my TIME has a higher value than it being wasted.
Take the five seconds to report them to Instagram/Facebook and move on with our day. Our time is too valuable to do more than that.
Some will say that watermarking photos is good marketing, you never know if someone will see the watermark and contact me for business.
I actually think it's good marketing for clients to actually upload the picture, shares it on his/her page where all of their friends can see it. They either thank you, their photographer in the caption (likely) or says nothing (still fine!)
LET ME KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS BELOW.
Whats your take on Watermarked Images?
If you're a photographer, do you wanted mark your images?
If you're a client do you prefer unmarked images?
I have had the true pleasure of working directly with Kelly of Nomad Nuptials not only at events and weddings for others but my own wedding as well.
Kelly's work has been featured in many wedding magazines, blogs, and featured on Instagram posts as well as Facebook. Her attention to the smallest details is why you want Kelly Winter on your side during a wedding or an event. She is the best of the best within the Temecula Valley region and delivers top quality work each and everytime.
"Remember tonight for it will be the beginning of forever" - Kelly Winter
I'll share my personal experience with you, as Kelly was our wedding coordinator! She took Jeromy and I under her wing as she helped us plan our extremely quick, yet very detailed boho wedding. We had about 4 months to plan our wedding, because I was hoping to have my father be able to walk me down the aisle. Kelly took on the challenge, she looked me straight in the eyes and told me not to worry about a thing and that she could make our wedding everything we had always wanted it to be.
Let me tell you, she wasn't lying! She did just that. We went over so many little details with her and we were so pleasantly surprised to see she hadn't missed any detail and the beautiful details she added as surprises for us, literally made us tear up! Our bohemian wedding dreams couldn't have been in better hands. Kelly and her team were amazing during the entire process and the day of was no exception! Let me tell you, having Kelly by my side literally during the entire wedding planning process was a blessing!
As a wedding photographer myself, I thought I knew how much went into planning a wedding. NOPE, I had no idea of all the details. She really knows what she is doing and will blow you away with her creative ideas that you are sure to love. Her style really shows through and it did on our wedding day. She made it unique, bold, beautiful and romantic. Our wedding day was simply perfect in every way!
Our wedding was held at Tres Lagos in Murrieta, if you happen to book this gem of a wedding venue be sure to talk with Kelly. She knows that property and honestly transformed it into our Boho Dreams!
By the way, our wedding was also featured! That's right, another wedding of hers was featured. This time her worked graced the Wedding Chicks blog, which is seen my millions!

Temecula Birth Photographer Enters The International Association of Professional Birth Photographers 2017 Image Competition
As a birth photographer, it is some time difficult to receive permission from clients to use their birth images on social media. I am sure most of you completely understand their hesitation, I know I do. I am so incredibly thankful and blessed that several of my amazing clients have allowed me photograph the birth of their child. I'm beyond appreciative to those client that have allowed me the honor of sharing their birth images with all of your.
My goal in sharing birth images, along with hundreds of other birth photographers and birth professionals is to normalize the birth process. What ever that process may be for each client, it is theirs to cherish. Many times females are often scared and afraid of having their baby, it's my goal to shed some positive light on births.
I want moms, dads, grandparents, aunts, uncles, sisters and brothers, best friends and whom ever else may be at the birth of a child to realize that it's normal and better yet it's a natural process. Being a birth photographer is not not gross, scary, insensitive or any of the other words I've heard to describe birth photographers. It's a true honor to be among parents and other birth professionals during the birth of a beautiful newborn.
With that said, I've entered a few of my 2016 Birth Images into the International Association of Professional Birth Photographers (IAPBP) "Birth Photography 2017 Image Competition". Today, the winners and honorable mentions will be announced. I am so excited to see all of the amazing professional birth photographers that have joined together to make this incredible and resilient birth community. We have shared so many images and stories with each other over the years, this last year was no exception. We've come together to offer words of encouragement, supportive feedback, love, prayers, tears and praise for each other. I am truly honored and blessed to be a part of such an amazing group of birth photographers, we are from every walk of life and we represent almost every city in the United States and we've reached across the seas internationally.
